"More Than A Boat"

This is a photo of a sunset on Lake Eyasi in Tanzania. I look at this to remind myself that no matter how bad a situation may seem, it could always be worse. You see, even though on the surface this looks peaceful and serene, which is how many of us in the Finger Lakes would naturally view a sunset lake photo like this, the truth is anything but. You see, for this trip to Tanzania I was documenting the great work being done to help provide battered, abused, & widowed, women with children, who had little to no resources whatsoever, and who, if lucky enough, were living in huts made from broken tree branches, earth and animal dung, a chance to live inside an actual 4-room brick home, with a sturdy metal roof and most importantly a lockable metal door. One of the women receiving a house during our trip was widowed with many children. The reason she became a widow is because her husband had gone out on Lake Eyasi to fish in the boat you see pictured here, and had gotten drunk from home brewed banana beer (drank by many locals to dull the pain of being irreversibly impoverished), had fallen asleep causing his boat to drift and get stuck in the mud close to shore, which caught the attention of several hyenas who then came and ate him before he could free himself from the mud. ----- Yeah,..... things could always be worse...
